We have recently been sorting through some of the boxes that contain Doreens artefacts. Amongst dozens of Tarot packs that she collected we came across this hand made set which we assumed were done by Doreen Valiente.
Dr Steven Critchley was the first to point out that the cards shown are not by Doreen but are the work of Arnold Crowther and appear in his and Patricia’s The Secrets of Ancient Witchcraft with the Witches Tarot, intr. by Dr Leo Louis Martello, (New York: Citadel Press, 1974) pp. 105-110.
Dr Critchly however has never seen a coloured set – they could have been photocopied and coloured by Doreen Valiente – or they may be an original set gifted to her by the Crowthers.
Doreen was a firm believer that making your own ritual items strengthened the power of the item and the link between the owner and the intent.
